If you want to experience true Mongolian wilderness, challenge yourself a bit for this horse trekking adventure to Khagiin Khar lake or the Secret pearl of Taiga. Located 180km from Ulaanbaatar, it is a glacial lake hidden deep in the forest of Khan Khentii protected area. As the lake is inaccessible by vehicle, either foot or horse trekking is ideal for those who wants to explore pristine natural beauty through variety of terrain on horseback. We’re a local family-owned business conducting tours with reliability for the past five years.

Itinerary

Day 1Meet up and drive to the starting point in the countryside

Ulaanbaatar

Pickup from hotel and drive out of the city (about 2 hours) to arrive at nomadic family near Khan khentii protected area. You can see nomadic herder lifestyle and way of living. Local guide prepares and load the horses, and the trip will start riding through Galtai river valley. Camping and overnight in a tent at foothill of Berkh mountain. The riding distance 15 kilometers.

Day 2Tuul River

Khan Khentii

Today we will ride through Tuul river valley to a more remote and wilderness area. You will enjoy only virgin nature. At the same time, trails become tougher with small bushes, forest trails, river corssing and some swamps.

Day 3Find the hidden pearl, Khagiin khar lake

Khag Lake

We will pass Khulur mountain and reach the Khagiin Khar lake around midday. Putting up the tents on the shore of the lake and relaxing from the long adventure. Bonfire party in the evening.

Day 4 Relaxing and free day at the lake

Khag Lake

Enjoying the day at the lake as you wish. Options are fishing, hiking around the lake. Enjoy evening bonfire and stay in a tent.

Day 5Leave the lake and ride back

Khan Khentii After two wonderful days at the lake, we’ll pack and go back. We’ll ride along beautiful Khag river which flows out of the Khagiin Khar lake. Overnight camping at Khonog tolgoi camping site.

Day 6Last day of the tour

Continue riding through Khag and Tuul river confluence and arrive at our starting point.
